Patchwork Course

from £20.00

Week to week you will be guided through the process of creating three patchwork blocks, each featuring a different design. Starting from scratch, you will be shown how to select the best fabrics, create your own designs, cut and prepare your patches ready for sewing them together by hand. You will be encouraged to take time, stitch precisely and find your own pace. There are no prizes for finishing quickly! Completing each block at home between sessions will help you to refine your stitching skills.

Working within a small group week to week is about creativity, community and conversation. Think of it as you time amongst others with a shared interest. As well as the opportunity to learn new skills, make something beautiful and to socialize, this course focuses on supporting wellbeing. You can find out more about how and a detailed breakdown of the course in the additional info below!

SUPPORTING WELLBEING

What will you gain by learning to create patchwork?

More than just sewing! Creating patchwork by hand has proven benefits for health and wellbeing.  Living in a world driven by technology, it can be difficult to relax because our brains have to cope with constant stimuli.  Finding ways to escape from the stresses of every day life can be difficult.  The rhythmic and repetitive nature of sewing patchwork can be like meditation which calms the mind and reduces anxiety. How? Because the focus needed to stitch and piece together fabrics draws attention away from day to day worries and promotes a state of mindfulness.   Completing a patchwork project brings a sense of achievement and pride which boosts self-esteem and self-confidence.

Do you think you can't sew or avoid doing anything creative because you are not confident?

Creating patchwork boosts creativity and self-expression because of the choices involved in which designs and colours to use. How they are combined can convey emotions and stories.    A growing sense of accomplishment is developed piece by piece.   You will be shown how to stitch patches together.

Other benefits...Repeatedly stitching, cutting and handling small pieces of fabric helps improve hand eye co-ordination. For older adults, this helps to maintain manual dexterity and strength.

Heritage Passed down through generations, patchwork pieces can become cherished family heirlooms.   Sustainability Patchwork improves sustainability and serves as a reminder of the need for slow living in a fast-paced world.

What previous participants have said...

It was a first intro to sewing for me since I was a young child, so it helped to get the foundations right from day one. Might also help someone who knows a bit of sewing but has never done patchwork. S.L.  Jan 2024

I loved seeing the patchwork designs take shape. It felt great seeing clothes being reused and I learned loads too! M.B-K. Oct 2022
